1. Install extra safety gadgets or systems such as iron grilles, key- operated locks or alarms for doors and windows (fix a door viewer on the main door). 2. Lock all doors, window and gates when leaving the house and at night. 3. Lock up ladders and other tools to prevent intruders from using them to enter your house. 4. Do not keep large amounts of cash and valuables at home. Keep cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box. 5. Seal holes to prevent intruders from using them to enter them your house. 6. Verify is identification of any personnel who claim to be public officers before letting them enter your house. 7. Trim overgrown tree branches, bushes and shrubs along the perimeter fencing regularly to prevent intruders from using them to enter or hide in your compound. 8. Do not leave house keys in flower pots or under the mat. Bring them with you. 9. Keep dogs or geese as pets to help guard your house. 10. Maintain a good relationship with your neighbours and keep an eye out for one another. 11. Make sure only you or your family members possess the house keys, especially if you have just moved to a new place. Changes to new mortise locks preferably with deadbolt features i.e. key needed to lock unlock the door. 12. Before leaving for a long trip, stop all newspaper deliveries. 13. Do not leave any sign or not indicating your absence. 14. Do not attempt to confront the robber if your house is being robbed while you are round. 15. Lodge a report at the nearest police station if you have been robbed. |
