FOMCA launched 'Protect Our Children' Campaign on 12 October 2009. The campaign aims to advise parents and teachers on the risks of media and internet use and suggest concrete actions and practices that they can undertake to minimize the risks to their children.

Currently, FOMCA is working through the Public and Private Pre-Schools and Kindergartens to reach Parents through their children.

FOMCA has prepared Brochures and will be Distributing to the parents through these Agencies

•    KEMAS
•    Kindergarten Association of Malaysia
•    Kinderland
•    Private Pre-school and Kindergarten agencies

The Campaign will be on-going to provide support to parents and teachers to assist to minimize risks to our Children – the future Generation of Malaysia.

Data on media use

1.    Children in Selangor aged 5 – 10 spend an average of 18.3 hour each week watching television without supervision. Daily average of 2.37 hours 

•    In 1996 only 11.6% Malaysians exercised

2.    Children and Youths (Malaysia) are spending too much time with the media especially TV:

•    Youth’s Favorite past time activities

o    84% surfing the net
o    73% watching movie
o    71% listening to music
o    42% - computer gaming
o    36% - blogging

Our concerns

1.    Sedentary lifestyle

•    Health consequences
•    Rate of obesity has shot from 20% to 37% in 10 years
•    30% suffer hypertension
•    9% - diabetes (20 years ago – 6%)
•    Diabetes on the rise among teenagers ages 13-19
•    500 out of 1 million – undergoing dialysis – one of the highest ratio in the world

•    Research by Nutrition Society of Malaysia
•    Malay Primary school – 32% worried about weight
•    Chinese Primary School – 26% worried about weight
•    Nine-year olds most anxious – 40% in Chinese school and 32% in Malay School
•    2% eat fast food every day
•    ½ at least once a month
•    Junk food

2.    Television Viewing Often encourages a more materialistic values

•    Psychological well-being consequences
•    3.9 million suffering from some form of mental health
•    National Health and Morbidity Survey 1996 –
•    mental health prevalent in 15 % of population
•    Unhappiness in children whose parents denied their request for advertised products
•    More disappointment over non-receipt of advertised toys
•    Increases parent-child conflict
•    Reduce interest in interacting with friends
•    Greater personal unhappiness

Materialism correlates with:

1.    Lower personal well-being
2.    Insecurity
3.    Fragile self-worth
4.    Poor relationships
