The Consumerism Debate between both public and private Higher Education Institution with Teacher’s Training Institution was held on the 18th to 21st June in Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Batu Pahat Johor. There were 41 teams participating this year from 21 public universities, 15 teacher’s training institutions and 5 colleges.

This fifth year debate with the theme “Social Responsibility in Realizing Sustainable Consumption” received cooperation from Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism, Malaysian Standards Department, Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Malayan University Debate Council (MADUM), Ministry of Higher Education and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

The prize giving ceremony was led by Y.Bhg Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Dom, Seceretary General of Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism on 21st June 2009. Also present were Y.Bhg Datuk Marimuthu Nadason, President of FOMCA and Y.Bhg Prof Dato' Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin, Vice Chancellor of UTHM. The debate champions were from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and they walked away with RM 7 000 together with trophy. The second prize went to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) team and they received RM 5 000 together with trophy. The best debater award was given to Mohd Syamsul Salleh from UPM, where he received cash RM 500 and the best debater of first league was given to Mohd Firdaus bin Ahmad from UM, who also received RM 500 cash.
