So your house has had that weathered look for years. For so long, you got away saying that it’s a fad. As time passes, it’s obvious that you’re too plain lazy to redecorate. Lavish decorations aren’t what are needed. You can achieve a contemporary look just by adhering to some simple rules. Do • Decide on a budget at the beginning. If your funds are limited, decorate one room at a time. • Buy items that will have the most pronounced effect on the room first- like a carpet, furniture and wallpaper. Accessories can be added. • Keep a scrapbook of decorating ideas – wallpaper samples, color schemes, etc. • Personalise your room; do no imitate someone else’s. Your personality and lifestyle should shine through. • Buy wallpaper, fabrics and floor coverings for their practical and decorative effect. Keep kids, pets and lifestyle in mind. • Make your ceiling the fifth wall of the room. Remember that walls can be on e color or pattern ceiling another. • To mix textures in a room, make sure there is a common denominator, like a common color. Don’t • Fall for fads in style and design. You’ll tire of them quickly. • Buy products because they are a bargain. Always make your furnishing and investment in the value of your home. • Fill every inch of space. Leave some breathing room for favourite items to stand out. • Use too many similar textures in room. They can cancel each other out. • Be afraid to experiment with different colours, textures and wallpaper designs. Make sure you understand those simple guidelines. Remember to follow them. Through time, you’ll be able to turn your house into a pleasant place to live in, and avoid being the ‘eyesore’ of the neighbourhood.
