The war on waste can also be waged at home. Here how;

1. Reduce electricity usage by switching to energy saving bulbs. Besides being lower wattage, it also puts out less heat which reduces the need to cool the room down.

2. Try buying locally grown fruits and vegetables instead of those in grocery stores. It cuts down on carbon emissions used by trucks that transport the goods across the nation.

3. Reduce food wastage by making a weekly grocery shopping list and sticking to it. When eating out, try to under-order than over-order. If you feel that you ordered too little, you can always order more.

4. Regularly check your fridge and freezer for ‘best before’ dates to avoid throwing away expired food. This also reduces the need to buy new food.

5. Traveling? Purchase e-ticket to avoid printing tickets.

6. Offer baby equipment and toys to friends or family members if you are no longer using them. Get as much use out of those items as possible.

7. Use social networking sites to offer unused items in good condition to those who may want it.

8. Boil water using a kettle on the stove than an electric kettle.

9. Have as much plants around the house to help cool the house down.

10. Switch the appliances off at the plug points as putting them on ‘standby mode’ still uses electricity.

11. Collect washing water and re-use it. For instance, flushing the toilets.
